The good news and the bad news!
| Which would you like first?! On the up side, Joe has just finished a very successful tour with his brother Ben. They've been promoting their brand new album The Mortgage Years. |
|
Go to the duo site to order your copy now! www.benandjoebroughton.co.uk. Joe also mixed and mastered the new Dave Swarbrick and Martin Carthy album Straws in the Wind. Work has also started in earnest on the new Chris While solo album which Joe is producing at his studio in Birmingham. The fiddle school (see below) is going fantastically well and is already bringing in guests (this week Roger Wilson and Anna Esslemont. Early next year Dave Swarbrick!) and to top it all off there has been some amazing feedback about the Uiscedwr album Circle that Joe produced earlier this year. Froots said "the star of the show may well be Joe Broughton...". Unfortunately there is bad news too as some of you may already know. Joe has a long standing back problem which lead to an operation back in 1997 and has now got to that point again. Joe is going into hospital now and won't be playing again until next year so all gigs have been cancelled until then. If you would like to email Joe (joebroughton@freenet.co.uk) he should be able to read them in a few weeks and would be very cheered up I'm sure! As soon as there's any more concrete info in a few weeks we'll post something here. |

News about News...and an update!
For various reasons too long and boring to go in to we haven't managed to update the news in the last few years but some of the gaps are filled in on the Biography page! At present Joe is producing an album by the fantastic Uiscedwr, visit their site to find out more here. At the same time he is also producing an album for a great singer called Jim Gallagher, more news on this when it's completed. The long awaited Folk Rock For Good album of the charity gig organised by Joe and his family in memory of his father is nearing completion and details will be posted here asap. Apologies to those people who have been waiting so patiently, it will be worth it! Joe is also working on the long awaited 3rd album from him and his brother Ben. They will be touring with this in September, please see the gigs page. Joe's 45 piece folk orchestra (below) will be touring at the end of May (again see the gigs page).

This really is a unique show full of great playing, singing and dancing so don't miss it! Sorry there's been such a gap in news, we will give you more info on what's been going on the last few years but at least this is a start!

The Waiting Room
three short movements about a man waiting.
On the 25th March Joe's composition The Waiting Room had it's first performance in Birmingham's Adrian Boult Hall. The classical experts found Joe's approach to composition very refreshing, including the unusual lay out of the stage and the lack of conductor. Joe thanks the players involved who on the night gave an exceptional performance. Although much happier in front of the audience Joe is hoping to continue developing his profile as a composer with more large scale works planned for the future.

Joe leaves the Albion Band
|
The Albion Band will be taking a break at the end of this year. Ashley may well start another line up on a smaller scale in the future but there are no definite plans at the moment. In December there will be an Albion line up touring a Christmas show and as Joe is not exactly a Christmas enthusiast he has decided that after the October tour is the time to go. This is what he says: "I have really enjoyed my time in the Albion Band but I think 6 years is long enough. I'm sad to hear that the band may be ending but I'm very proud that we have been called one of the all time best line ups. I'll be writing my Albion Memoirs soon so watch this space! Now I will be concentrating on my work with Ben and with Kevin Dempsey as well as the very exciting prospect of a band of my own. I hope to see you all at a gig soon." |

Sound Engine - Joe's first solo album is out now! |
|
For what must be several years now Joe has been trying to find enough time away from other projects to concentrate on his own album. Finally, it is finished. Although writing and playing most of it himself, Joe also enlisted help from a host of great artists: Fred T Baker > Neil Yates > Ken Nicol > Neil Marshall > Jo Hamilton > Ben Vlijmincx > Joy Krishnamoorthy and Joe Giddey. You will find more information on the discography page. |
